Where to Find Lions in the Wild

If you are planning a holiday like no other in the coming months and years, one of the best things to think about is where you can see some of the best wildlife on the planet. If you are visiting the Masai Mara to stay at an exclusive lodge, trekking to India or visiting South Africa, there is loads of potential to see some majestic creatures. Here, we look at the best places to visit in the world if you would like to find lions in the wild. The lion is one of the most incredible creatures in the world, and they are the only species of cat that continue to live in groups.

Worldwide there are thought to be somewhere between 23,000 and 40,000 lions living in the wild. Most of these can be found in Africa, which is why safari holidays and Masai Mara excursions are so popular, as people try to see the great animals of our time before it is too late. As long as you are sensible and choose safari holiday destinations where your stay coincides with conservation efforts, you too could soon see lions in the wild.

Where should you start?

The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem is one of the best places to see lions in the wild. The ecosystem spans a large area across Kenya and Tanzania, taking in the Masai Mara nature reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Within this area there are many rivers, grasslands, forests and more. From an incredible lodge on the Masai Mara you could experience one of the great wonders of the world in The Great Wildebeest Migration. With over a million wildebeest migrating every year, this is the best time to see other wildlife, including lions and other predators. There are around 600 lions in the Masai Mara and a further 3,000 in the Serengeti National Park.

Other parts of Africa where you can expect to see lions in the wild include Laikipia in Kenya, where Lion Landscapes and Mugie Conservancy allow for access and insight into how the protection of prides is functioning in the area. Okavango Delta in Botswana and Kruger National Park in South Africa (which is incredibly home to all of Africa’s big 5!) are also spectacular safari holidays where you will have the pleasure of seeing lions in the wild.

Seeing the majestic lion in its natural habitat is one of those moments that you’ll never forget. Knowing that you can see lions in the Masai Mara means that you can get to enjoy more than just this spectacular moment, with a holiday at a Masai Mara lodge that will be lifechanging. Travelling to the Masai Mara to witness the wonder of the Great Wildebeest Migration is truly incredible. You can see lions and other great animals in the wild, live in luxury at a private lodge, sip cocktails on a private terrace whilst watching the sun go down on the Masai Mara. It is an exquisite approach to life that will never be forgotten.
